The Oregon Public Utility Commission recently sanctioned a comprehensive rate hike for all customers of Portland General Electric. Households are set to experience the most significant surge, with a 17.2% increase on their bills. Businesses and industrial entities are also bracing for increases of 15.9% and 11% respectively. PGE’s leadership attributes these hikes to the substantial costs associated with upgrading the grid as the company shifts from the traditional, cost-efficient natural gas to an emerging blend of wind and solar power. The future likely holds further hikes as Oregon mandates a shift from fossil fuels. This underscores the importance of energy independence. Without competition, PGE may continue escalating prices, leaving consumers without alternatives. Currently, propane is emerging as a cleaner, more economical option for home heating and water heating, especially as 60% of Oregon’s electricity still comes from natural gas and coal. Propane, with lower carbon emissions, non-toxicity, and no groundwater pollution risk, coupled with the increasing availability of renewable propane, positions it as a viable, eco-friendlier alternative. Thank you for your support in 2023. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
